Here are a couple of tips to understand and survive.
1. UK is not England, UK is the United Kingdom and it is England, Wales, Scotland and Norther Ireland. Learn that Southport is not in the South and Northampton is in the middle. Names repeat all over and there is no way of knowing how to get to an address. Get a satnav! 2, Privacy is King. People in the UK are more reserved, and value privacy more: It is not personal. Tone your voice volume down or you may be shocked to discover people think you’re pushy or angry specially if you talk using your hands. 2. British Humour: Sarcastic and dry, sometimes subtle, sometimes bizarrely off-the-wall and they love sexual innuendos. Confused? Basically less is more and opposite is always the way. See that British Say and What They Really Mean. They make fun of everything including religion. |
Are you feeling lonely, are you feeling a lack of confidence or longing for your family? Are you are having trouble sleeping or feeling blue? You might be experience culture shock.
Everybody that immigrates goes trough this process of adaptation. After living in England for nearly 8 years, I am volunteering helping people from different countries settle into Weston-super-Mare. 3. American English is not English English: I learned American English in Guatemala and when I came to England in 2009, there are so many words so very different 4. Make British friends: I believe is the easiest way to totally integrate in society because you will have an insider who you can ask questions. 5. Do not sit next to anybody in the bus: they value their personal space and it is so much more that for us. So please, if you don't want somebody looking at you weirdly, keep space for the holy spirit. Last but not least: Just be yourself, people will like you as you are. |
