While in Rio de Janeiro celebrates carnival for 4 weeks with not a lot of clothes and Guatemala has been saving egg shells to fill them with confetti to smash them in peoples heads, here in England I have an invitation for a Pancake race!
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in many ways around the world , but today I want to share with my friends why it is Pancake day in England.
A woman in South East England was making pancakes when the church bells called everybody to the service. She grabbed her head scarf and ran to church with the pancakes in the pan (skillet). I can imagine it was so funny, people carried on the tradition and made it into a race to see who could reach the church first and collect a “Kiss of Peace” from the verger (bell-ringer.)
They have been doing Pancake day for over 500 years!
So, now I will go and make some delicious pancakes and enjoy this British tradition!
