After 5,125 years, Baktun 13 cycle will end on the 20/12/12. (Each one equals 20 years or 7,200 days.)
On the 21st. of December, another Baktun cycle will begin (at the winter solstice). Mayan descendants will do offerings like incense, flowers, colorful candles and fresh fruit. Every single one with a purpose and meaning.
Back in the Classic Period (250-900 AD) twin pyramids in Tikal were also build specially for this special time.
The Mayan were great engineers and astronomers.
They study the sun and the moon cycles, that helped them with their harvest.
Maize was, and still is the main staple. You can read about how the Mayans were born from the corn in the most important Mayan book: the "Popol Vuh".
The Mayan calendar is 260 days divided in 20 weeks of 13 days. Each week is represented with a figure called "Glyph". See bellow in the Photo gallery examples.
Some people believe that the magnetic poles will switch, others that the sun will flare up, others that is the end of the world as we know it... If you ask me, I think it is just a good time to reflect on us, as people, as humans, on how we behave and what we pursue in life.
Tell me what you think ;)
