Diwali is perhaps the most well-known of the Hindu festivals. The word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'. Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas In Britain, as in India, the festival is a time for:

I started as a BME Intercultural Agent with Age UK Somerset in October and it has been excellent to meet people from Jamaica, Chile, Philippines, Turkey, China, India and Guatemala. Today I went to Winscombe market in the Community Centre and I met Sonia who is from Chile and has been a resident for over 20 years. She doesn't know anybody from Chile in the area but I have and I hope to connect them. She does very specialized cards with oil colours, place mats and Latinamerican jellies that I had the delight to taste. Her daughter is off to Cuba tomorrow to raise funds for the British Liver Trust and I thought to give her a mention for their work in the community here in England. If you know anybody from the BME communities in Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea, Worle, Yatton, Congesbury, Weston or surrounding villages, please get in contact with me. We have social events, handcrafts, exercises, free IT lessons, benefit checks and more for the residents of Somerset. Contact me to [email protected] Thank you As many of you know, I came to England in 2009 and decided to change my work from machines to people. Now, I have a great oportunity to work with AGE UK and the BME communities in #Somerset. Being part of a minority, I know what it means to feel isolated and culture shock. I have been very lucky to have made great British friends that have showed me the ways in England. For that I will be eternally grateful. Now I have the amazing opportunity to go out into Somerset to find isolated people to mentor them and help them integrate in the community: from basic information (health, education, community, eating healthy and exercising) to refer them to professionals that can help. If you know anybody that might be isolated in Portishead, Nailsea, Clevedon, Yatton, Congresbury, Wsm or anywhere in Somerset, please let them know I am looking for them. "Age UK Somerset promotes the well-being of all older people in Somerset and North Somerset to make later life an enjoyable and fulfilling experience" Please share this post with your friends and family because this is a great of networking. I was impressed to see that there is a 6% of people between 55-64 years old using Facebook in England. (Acording to Facebook UK Statistics) so I am being hopeful they will come forward with contacts for me ;) Thank you very much for your help Want to have a get together and exchange English and Spanish?
