Me hiking under 40 degrees! I was pleased to read this morning about this article by Lonely Planet: Tikal is #1 of the "10 Best Things to Climb in the world!" They researched over 1,000 ultimate experiences and Tikal came out #1!!!! Followed by Namibia, Argentina, Scotland, Hawaii, Siria, Peru, India, Australia and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania!!! wow, so if you live in Guatemala or never been there, take 2013 to put Tikal in your #1 list of wish travelling and make it happen! I did the sunrise tour, woke up at 3 am and seen the perfect sun raising from the Jungle as howling monkeys woke up to start the most amazing jungle concert I have ever imagined. I can still picture all our group sitting on Temple VI feeling the amazing energy of the Mayan civilization and speechless for the natural richness that surrounded us. See the full article in: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/guatemala/travel-tips-and-articles/76630 Today I had the lovely opportunity to go to Weston College and talk to Tourism students about Ecotourism in Guatemala. I hope I had inspired them to get involved with the communities and be agents of change.
"My favorite Ecotourism destinations are the hot springs Finca Paraiso in Izabal, Tortuguerio Monterrico Wildlife Reserve where you release baby turtles into the sea and 17,791-acre Chocón-Machacas Nature Reserve where you can see manatees." Today is the Garifuna festival. About 12,000 people in Guatemala are African descendants and they came in British ships mostly departing from Bristol. A town called Livingstone in Izabal is where they have found a home and thrive They love drums and music and have a rich cuisine where you find from coconut shrimp to the famous "Tapado" witch is a seafood soup with plantain and coconut milk. Happy Yumein to all the Garifunas in Guatemala! Click on my photo to discover how to visit Guatemala. Walking down the pebbled streets of Antigua Guatemala. It is so colorful, like time stood still in the XVI century. Antigua has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It used to be the capital of Guatemala, but it was destroyed on 1541 by a devastating lahar from the Volcán de Agua. As a result, the colonial authorities decided to move the capital five miles away to the Panchoy Valley, where Guatemala city is now. There are many Spanish language schools in Antigua and it is one of the most popular and best recognized centers for Spanish language study. Having a "Ceviche" in Cevicheria la Blanqui, Escuintla. Escuintla is known as "city of the palm trees" and it is where my family come from in Guatemala. We have the best seafood and ceviche is a marinade of seafood with lime juice, tomatoes, onions, parsley, and spices. Very fresh and healthy! See my video blog on how to make your own here in England! Hiking the jungle in Tikal. Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a must do in Guatemala! Dancing Salsa every weekend! Salsa music is a fusion of Afro-Cuban musical styles Salsa means 'sauce' in the Spanish language and carries connotations of the spiciness common in Latin and Caribbean cuisine. It is a great exercise and reduce stress levels. My favorite latin music are salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, chachacha and regeton. Having a coconut of the road to the Pacific Ocean! Very refreshing and only £0.25 each! This is "Cocales" that means "Place of the coconuts" Coconut water has a high potassium content and contains antioxidants Come and try one! It sounds kids play but actually its just what the doctor recommended you to do on your next holiday! Imagine drifting in this heaven like river, where your worries are washed away and you can reconnect with nature as you never felt it before! Do you feel like flying trough the forest? Modern life seems to enclose us in 4 walls and keeping in touch with nature is a great way to relax . Just 2 hours away from the International airport in #Guatemala, you reach beautiful #Jalapa . It is 1,362 meters above sea level, their inhabitants enjoy an excellent weather, which is mild temperate; for this reason Jalapa is Known as the "climatologic of the east". It is never too cold and never too hot. We got one of the most adventurous canopy experiences in the country and it is highly recommended! Some of the activities you can do include canopy, rappel, camping, eco lodges, walking tours, waterfalls and more! So put it on your bucket list and start planning your get away to the country of eternal spring!! Photos courtesy of Cascadas de Tatasirire, 2012. |
