While in Rio de Janeiro celebrates carnival for 4 weeks with not a lot of clothes and Guatemala has been saving egg shells to fill them with confetti to smash them in peoples heads, here in England I have an invitation for a Pancake race! Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in many ways around the world , but today I want to share with my friends why it is Pancake day in England. A woman in South East England was making pancakes when the church bells called everybody to the service. She grabbed her head scarf and ran to church with the pancakes in the pan (skillet). I can imagine it was so funny, people carried on the tradition and made it into a race to see who could reach the church first and collect a “Kiss of Peace” from the verger (bell-ringer.) They have been doing Pancake day for over 500 years! So, now I will go and make some delicious pancakes and enjoy this British tradition! |

Posadas: In Guatemala we like to celebrate Christmas with "Posadas". Posada is Spanish for "lodging", or "accommodation" and they represent the journey of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay. It is traditionally a 9 day celebration and it was originally from Spain. Now celebrated chiefly in Mexico, Guatemala and parts of the Southwestern United States 2. Fireworks: Everybody loves to burn fireworks at midnight on the 25th and at noon on Christmas day. I close my eyes and I can smell them still... 3. Gallo Christmas Tree: We got one Guatemalan beer: "Gallo" and we love it! Being Gallo a very big company, they assemble a giant Christmas tree for all to enjoy at Plaza Obelisco in Guatemala city. They have Christmas carols and a firework display. 4. Nativities: Nativities in Guatemala are a tradition that has become an art. This is a "Mayan terracota Nativity". The families remain awake until midnight on Christmas eve, with baby Jesus covered. Then he is unveiled and celebrated. At my grandmas house it was a whole table dedicated to it, I am still looking for pictures to share with you. 5. Santa Claus: Believe it or not, Santa Claus comes to Guatemala wearing sunglasses! We adotped Father Chrsitmas because of all the American influence in my country. You can see Grottos in every shopping mall. In my family, Santa Claus came at 8 pm to my aunties house on Christmas eve (yes, earlier than to England!) and he would give presents to all or my 22 cousins! Looking trough my trips in Central-america I found this pictures that show Copan. It is just off the border with Guatemala and was the capital city of the Mayan Classic Period from the 5th to 9th centuries AD.
