I have been volunteering with North Somerset BME Network since 2009.

In Guatemala, we drive on the left side and when I relocated in England I was using public transport. I needed to take a theoretical and practical exam to get a British Driving licence. Only if you are from the European Union can you get it transferred over.

So, North Somerset BME Network organised a group to learn the theory to pass the test and I did!

This support really helped me get back to my engineering career in England. I have been supporting North Somerset BME network since then. In the last 2 months over 150 people walked into 12 Orchard Place in Weston-super-mare to make new friendships, gain employment, get qualifications or access services.

On Saturday 26 of August, North Somerset BME Network organised an event about Women's Equality and I given a talk about Women in Engineering.

I had the experience to work in Textiles, plastic, mining, highways and transport and the aim of my talk was to encourage more women to study engineering. Even thought I studied Chemical Engineering, there seems to be a huge demand for Civil, electrical and mechanical engineers in UK at the moment.

So, start getting inspired and start applying for spaces in universities. There are lots of options to choose from. Some are:

  • Imperial College London.
  • University of Cambridge.
  • University of Oxford.
  • University of Durham.
  • University of Bristol.
  • University of Leeds.
  • University of Warwick.
  • Loughborough University.

Find more information at Engineering in the UK Webpage.

This event was organized by North Somerset BME Network, a local charity that aims to connect people between cultures.
